UNIFOR-FRIMED
UNIFOR-FRIMED is a funding scheme for free, basic and long-term medical research
The medical research funding scheme supports all medical fields and disciplines and functions as an open competition arena without requirements for specific topics, applications or immediate practical benefit.
New knowledge often emerges in unexpected ways through basic research. For this reason, UNIFOR-FRIMED aims to support research projects of high scientific quality, regardless of application or short-term usefulness. Scientific quality is the decisive criterion for allocation.
The purpose is to help more research environments at the University of Oslo qualify for national and international research funding, particularly EU funding. Applicants with clear plans to apply for such funding may be prioritised.
Who may apply?
The target group is research group leaders with the strongest research projects.
To be eligible, applicants must:
• Hold a permanent academic position at the University of Oslo with internal funding (not a fixed-term or project position)
• State their job title and departmental/unit affiliation
• Upload documentation confirming their position (e.g. employment letter or confirmation from HR)
• Provide a link to their UiO homepage
Academic staff in fixed-term positions, externally funded positions, and technical staff are not eligible, even if they participate in research activities. Postdoctoral fellows, PhD candidates and others in temporary positions may contact their group leader to have their project included in the leader’s application.
A maximum of one application may be submitted per research group leader per call.
Research groups that already receive substantial external funding (for example from SFF, SFI, Jebsen, or major EU grants) will normally not be prioritised.
What can be applied for?
Operating expenses (not salary costs) may be applied for in one-year research projects affiliated with the University of Oslo. Funding is typically in the range of NOK 50,000–150,000, although exceptionally strong applications may receive a higher amount.
Salary costs
FRIMED funding cannot be used to cover salaries. However, it is permitted to include costs for infrastructure where salary is included indirectly—for example, use of animal facilities, biobanks or core facilities where staffing is included in rental or service fees. Such costs are considered operating or facility costs.
Duration and reporting
Allocations from UNIFOR-FRIMED apply for one year at a time. Multi-year grants are not awarded. Funds must be used within the budget year, and the project must be concluded with a brief report.
Projects that have previously received support may reapply in later calls. These applications are processed on an equal footing with new applications. Reports and documented results from the previous year will be included in the assessment.
This practice contributes to a fair and transparent allocation process while ensuring that reporting has real significance. Productive projects with clear results may be more competitive in subsequent application rounds.
Application process
The application form becomes available each year from 15 January, with a deadline of 15 February.
Applications must be submitted electronically through UNIFOR’s application portal.
