Are you a master’s or PhD student at the University of Oslo with a commitment to academic excellence and global impact? The SYLFF Scholarship offers a unique opportunity to fund research stays abroad, designed to support students who are passionate about advancing international understanding in fields like Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Education, and Theology.

This scholarship prioritizes PhD candidates but is also open to exceptional master’s students who demonstrate both academic and leadership potential. The scholarship funds research activities that enable students to connect with leading institutions and organizations, enhancing their projects with valuable international perspectives.

Key Areas of Support for SYLFF Recipients:

  • PhD Candidates: Grants for research stays abroad, fostering project goals and building essential professional networks.
  • Master’s Students: Funding for field research, thesis support, and international academic conference participation. (Note that courses at foreign institutions are not included.)

Selection Criteria

The UiO SYLFF Steering Committee considers applications based on:

  • Academic Excellence: A strong academic record and impactful research objectives.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven achievements in leadership and social contribution.
  • Clear Research Goals and Budget: A well-defined plan with a transparent budget (up to NOK 50,000).

Application Requirements

To apply, your application must include:

  • Motivation Letter: Highlighting why this scholarship is crucial for your research goals (updated if reapplying).
  • CV: Detailing academic and leadership experience.
  • Project Summary: A concise overview of your international research focus, including how this grant will directly support your objectives (updated if reapplying).
  • Budget Outline: A clear, reasonable budget proposal for your planned activities.
  • Recommendation Letters: From your academic supervisor and, if relevant, your international host.
  • Institutional Confirmation: Admission or invitation from your host institution abroad (if applicable).
  • Commitment to SYLFF Network: An agreement to represent UiO as a SYLFF-Fellow and engage in the SYLFF-Fellows Network during and after the funding period.
